Author: Parry, William Edward Place: London Publisher: John Murray Date: 1821; 1824 Description: 2 volumes together universally bound in nineteenth century maroon polished calf ruled in gilt and blind with blindstamped fleurons, ruled and tooled in gilt on spine with green and maroon morocco lettering pieces, marbled endpapers. [8], xxix, [3], 310, [2], clxxix, [1] pp. Illustrated with frontispiece folding Polar Chart, 14 plates, 5 maps, of which 4 are folding. Also included are several tables, of which 1 is folding.(4to) 26.5x21 cm (10½x8¼"). Second Edition. [8], xxx, [2], 571 pp., [1] (errata). Illustrated with 28 of 30 plates (including frontispiece, of which 4 are folding, and 9 maps, of which 4 are folding. (4to) 26.5x21.5 cm (11x8½"). Lacking errata slip. Parry’s voyage was to be recognized as one of the most important in the history of Arctic exploration: he proved that Lancaster Sound opened a passage to the west, he charted a vast area of the unknown Arctic, and proved that it was possible to spend the winter north of the Arctic Circle without being in grave danger. Upon his return to London, Parry was promoted to the rank of Commander and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. There was a supplement to the appendix (pp. clxxxiii-cccx) published in 1824, not present with this copy. Second Voyage lacks two plates "Cutting into Winter Island" and Takkeelikkeeta, an Esquimaux Igloolik, 1823". Sabin 58860; 58864. Lot Amendments Condition: Rubbing to edges and corners, with spine rubbing more pronounced, front joint of Vol. I cracking; some foxing with a bit of offsetting from plates. stubtear to Baffin's Bay map in Vol. I repaired; some ill-creased maps and coastal views in Vol. II; very good overall.
