Pen and ink on paper, approx. 14 x 9 in. (sight), framed to 19 x 14 in. Signed lower right, "J.R. Chapin," and inscribed below, "Chap XXVI / Preparing for the charge.'" John R. Chapin (1823-1904) was an accomplished nineteenth-century artist and illustrator from New York whose work appeared in publications such as Harper's Weekly. He was also a noted Civil War field artist who produced the famous sketch The Surrender of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, April 12, 1865, which is housed at the Library of Congress. Condition: Light surface soil with minor areas of discoloration and brown spots. Not examined outside frame.
