JOHANNES DE SACROBOSCO. Sphaera mundi [with other tracts]. Venice: Guilelmus Anima Mia, Tridinensis, 14 January 1491. Chancery 4to, 199 x 150 mm. (7 7/8 x 5 7/8 in.), modern stiff vellum, first line of text on f5r cropped, d6r-v with first lines shaved, manuscript headlines cropped, small rust hole to b1 catching a letter, scattered foxing or spotting, a few leaves browned . Collation: a-f 8 . 48 leaves, unfoliated. 42 lines. Types: 6:113R (capitals), 5:78R (text), 50G (a few words in diagram on fol. a8), 68G (a few words in diagrams on fols. a4r, a5r-v, b1v, b2r-v, b3r, etc.). Full-page woodcut on verso of title-leaf showing Astronomia enthroned flanked by Urania and Ptolemy, large woodcut of the "Sphaera mundi" on a3v, numerous woodcut diagrams, 12-line and 4-line white-on-black woodcut initials. The allegorical cut, initial on facing page, and Sphaera mundi cut partially colored, 7 of the diagrams of planetary orbits colored in stencil. Sacrobosco's popular Sphaera mundi , one of the most frequently reprinted scientific books of the 15th century (over 30 editions are recorded between 1472 and 1501) is accompanied by J. Regiomantanus, Disputationes contra Cremonensia and G. Peurbach, Theoricae novae planetarum . The text is a page-for-page reprint of Octavianus Scotus's 1490 edition; the woodcuts are very close copies of the cuts from that edition, which first appeared in Johannes Santritter and Hieronymus de Sanctis's edition of 31 March 1488. Provenance : Manuscript running-titles in an early hand; early marginalia in a different hand ( nearly all cropped ) -- "M. Sebastiani Gleyss ex purgstall austriaci sum 1515", inscription on title.
