Jacques Villon (French, 1875-1963), After Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954) L'Espagnole, c. 1925, edition of 200, published by Bernheim-Jeune, Paris (Ginestet & Pouillon, E645). Signed "Henri - Matisse" in pencil l.r., numbered "89/200" in pencil l.l., identified and with date and publisher within the plate. Color aquatint on paper, plate size 15 5/8 x 11 in. (39.5 x 27.6 cm), framed. Condition: Margins 2 1/4 inches or more, laid down, glue/residue to margins, mat burn, toning, scattered fox marks, two losses to edges. N.B. Although Villon had his own very distinct style as a printmaker, essentially being one of the first graphic artists to a the Cubist vocabulary, he was also skilled at capturing the styles of other artists' work as intaglio prints. He copied compositions not only by Matisse, but Signac, Renoir, Duchamp, Utrillo, and Cezanne, among others.
