Silver gelatin photograph of Geronimo with Irwin's Chickasha, Indian Territory imprint below image on mount, ca 1890. Geronimo (1829-1909), also known as Gokhlayeh or One Who Yawns, wears a Plains Indian feather bonnet and holds a rare Dance & Bros. Confederate revolver. On verso is a penciled note: "Geronimo / Chief of the notorious Band of Arizona Apache Indians now a Prisoner of War at Fort Sill." When Geronimo surrendered to Charles Gatewood in 1886, he first was under the command of Nelson Miles at Skeleton Canyon, AZ. They were sent first to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, then to Fort Pickens in Pensacola, FL and Fort Marion. In 1888 the Chiricahuas were relocated to Mt. Vernon Barracks (AL), then in 1894 to Fort Sill, OK (Indian Terr.). In 1898, Geronimo was part of a delegation to the Trans-Mississippi International Exposition in Omaha, Nebraska, becoming a star attraction at the fair. This launched his career as an attraction at other fairs (Pan American Expo in Buffalo, NY; Louisiana Purchase Expo in St. Louis). In 1909 he contracted pneumonia at Fort Sill and died a short time later. Condition: Excellent condition.
