HONORÉ-VICTORIN DAUMIER, STUDIES OF WRESTLERS, BLACK CHALK
This drawing is preparatory for the group of two wrestlers located in the left part of the eponymous painting conserved at the Ordrupgaard (inv. no. 278 WH; see B. Anderberg et al., French Art at Ordrupgaard. Complete Catalogue of Paintings, Sculptures, Pastels, Drawings, and Prints, Ostfildern, 2011, no. 33). Several sketches of wrestlers relate to the composition, but none exactly matches the final version. The present drawing is a rediscovery: considered missing until now, it can be related to two other studies sheets preserved at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, also from the collection of Roger Marx (H. Loyrette, Daumier 1808-1879, exhib. cat., Paris, Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais, 1999-2000, pp. 332-333). All probably date from the period of the painting in Ordrupgaard, i.e. from around 1852-1853.
