Histoire du concile de Constance, tirée principalement d'auteurs qui ont assisté au concile Author: Lenfant, Jacques Place: Amsterdam Publisher: Chez Pierre Humbert Date: 1714 Description: 2 volumes in 1, continuous pagination. [6], xlviii, 816 pp. Illustrated with two title pages printed in red & black, with engraved vignettes; 19 engraved portrait plates. (4to) 25.4x18 cm (10x7"), period calf, spine tooled in gilt, red morocco spine label, raised bands, all edges stained red; patterned endpapers. Record of the 15th-century ecumenical council recognized by the Catholic Church, held from 1414 to 1418 in the Bishopric of Constance. The council ended the Western Schism by deposing or accepting the resignation of the remaining papal claimants and by electing Pope Martin V. The engraved plates include portraits of Friedrich Wilhelm, King of Prussia (the work's dedicatee), Jan Hus, Emperor Sigismund, Jean Gerson, and other participants in the Council. Ink ownership inscription at top of title page dated 1764. Lot Amendments Condition: Rubbing to covers, front joint tender; hinges tender, faint marginal toning and foxing; very good.
