Hispano Suiza T49 (27HP) Engine and Gearbox Engine No. 8006 Engine: six-cylinder,bore 85mm, stroke 110mm, OHC 3,746c.c., detachable cylinder-head; Gearbox: three speed; Single disc clutch. The Hispano Suiza, its name literally meaning Spain-Switzerland, was conceived in Spain by Swiss-born engineer Marc Birkigt. Some magnificent cars were built in Barcelona of which the best known in the early years was the famed Alfonso sports tourer. In 1911 a factory was established in France to cater for the lucrative Parisian market and it went on to make aero engines and an assortment of models based on the Spanish originals, as well as some particularly luxurious cars of French origin. The Spanish company made rather more vehicles than the French one in the 1920s/30s (usually with iron blocks instead of French alloy type) and ended car production during the Second World War, its factory subsequently becoming the home of the Pegaso. The T49, or 27 h.p. as it was known in the UK, was produced in Spain between 1924 and 1930. It was essentially a smaller version of the 32 c.v. This example is believed to be a T49 engine and gearbox and was purchased by the present owner 13 years ago. Prior to this, it had been brought up to its present standard in order to be exhibited in the Westridge Heritage Museum on the Isle of Wight. It was professionally stripped, cleaned and reassembled, but has not been started. Apart from a missing starter motor and side plate it is believed to be largely original and complete.
