HEMINGWAY, Ernest. Two autograph letters signed ("P.O. Poppa" and "Ernest") to Jane Mason ("Dear Daughter" and "Dear Jane") in Tuxedo Park, New York, and Havana; written from Havana and Bimini, 19 September [1934] and 22 July 1935. Together 4 pages, 4to, in pencil on three sheets of poor quality tan paper; the first letter written in lighter pencil on a sheet of thinner paper, a fold tear crossing across a few letters, two tiny fold holes, and some mild and discoloration; with stamped envelopes addressed in ink by Hemingway, the first with his name written in return address, the second with a 14-word note in ink and pencil by Hemingway on back of envelope . "I AM WRITING ON THE BOAT AT NOON BUT IT IS VERY TRISTE WITHOUT YOU" 19 September [1934] (Hemingway has just returned to Havana after a quick trip with his family to Key West and has found that Jane Mason has gone to New York): "...I did nearly 100 pages [on Green Hills of Africa ]...and came back here to find a south wind -- you gone -- the run of fish over and me plenty of fever -- too sick to work...I am writing on the boat [the Pilar ] at noon but it is very triste without you (and your provisions of course). You were certainly in swell shape when I left -- never saw you in better shape. Take care of yourself in N.Y. How go your pieces? [Jane had begun writing with Hemingway's encouragement.] They were really very good and I was proud of them. Let me know what you do and let me see them too...Give my love to my god son [Tony] -- also to Mr. [Archibald] MacLeish if he's not under a glass (waiting?) for Nov. 7 (he never wrote) maybe he didn't think the letter is funny...Love to yourself from P.O. [Poor Old] Poppy and the Crew of the 'Pilar.'" 22 July 1935 (reporting on his fishing at Bimini and planning for Jane to visit): "...I caught two marlin 330 [lbs.] (25 minutes) and 364 (32 minutes) one day -- two days later (birthday) caught one 540 (30 minutes). Before that we had some terrible luck...You would have a good chance to catch a big marlin...It has been too breezy to drift and we catch them all trolling. The 364 and 540 were [bone?] hooked -- one jumped 43 times, the other 18. There was quite a while with no fish but then they ran beautifully...All the kids brown and crazy about the beach and the place. Those were wonderful presents of caviar, and every kind of fine food and dainties you sent...It seems this was my turn to write you. Pauline writes a better letter. I'll try to write you a better one next time." (2)
