Wilcox of Scribner's Book Store in New York (the retail store of his publishers), Finca Vigia, San Francisco de Paula, Cuba, 28 June 1949 and 23 July 1954. Together 2 pages, 4to, single-spaced, on onion skin paper with Hemingway's address imprinted in red, the second letter wrinkled and with a few pencilled notes (by Wilcox?), with stamped envelope with address typed by Hemingway for the second letter. HEMINGWAY ORDERS BOOKS 28 June 1949: "Will you please send me the following: New book on Ford Madox Ford (believe by Douglas Goldring or another Englishman who wrote a life of Frank Harris -- Hugh Kingsmill is the name). Don't know which one it is..." (Actually the book on Ford is Douglas Goldring's The Last Pre-Raphaelite , issued in America in 1949 under the title Trained for Genius .) Hemingway goes on to order three other books (including two on World War II) and adds: "Could you check and see if my subscription to the NY Times Book Review and The Herald Tribune same were renewed?..."
