Contemporary brown calf (rebacked, rubbed at extemities). FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, bearing the engraved work of Revere before gaining fame in the Revolutionary War. The text of this edition is that of volumes 2 and 3 of the first edition printed in London, 1773. Pages 79/80 (leaf G4) contained a description of Cook's involvement in the restraint of a native girl; it appears that a previous owner of this copy has censored this potentially offensive rape passage.
