(11 x 7 1/2in.), olive morocco, covers with gilt design of interlacing strapwork and swirling leafy stems, spine similarly gilt, board edges and turn-ins gilt, g.e., by Pratt, spine faded to brown, joints slightly rubbed, title-leaf with gutter restored and 2 small marginal repairs, small tears at gutter of second leaf, rust-holes to fols. *5 and D2 with loss to woodcut on *5r and to one letter on each verso, hole to 2G6 affecting 8 letters, repaired tears to fols. 2Q5, 2T6 and 3M4, each affecting a few letters, worm-track to gutter from R2 through Bb5, touching several letters and woodcut initial on R4r, fols. 3M4-8 remargined on 3 sides, one or two headlines or border rules affected and touched up in ink, the last 5 leaves partially or totally remargined, large marginal repairs to the antepenultimate leaf with loss to text, the affected areas supplied in ink facsimile, lacking final blank leaf, the world map linen-backed, one 1 1/2-inch repaired tear, a few further marginal repairs to map and text leaves, the volume washed, a few leaves discolored, occasional minor staining . FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST ENGLISH COLLECTION OF VOYAGES, second issue of the Bowes leaves (2Y1-6), mostly black letter, FOLDING ENGRAVED MAP OF THE WORLD, woodcut initials and head- and tail-pieces, WITH THE SIX UNPAGINATED LEAVES DESCRIBING DRAKE'S CIRCUMNAVIGATION inserted between pages 642 and 643, with blank leaf X4. "Hakluyt with his collection of exemplary English voyages served the historic function of propagandist for English mercantilism and colonial expansion"--Streeter sale I, 28. The map (Shirley 167), which is often lacking, is based on that of the 1587 edition of Ortelius; it was reused in the first English edition of Linschoten's Itinerario (London 1598, cf. lot --).
