HAKLUYT, Richard (1552-1616). Document signed ("Richard Hakluyt"), countersigned by John Savile (1556-1630, later First Baron Savile of Pontrefact), Henry Garnett (1555-1606, the noted Jesuit, executed 1606), Robert Brygges and others, text in a small English court hand with attractively flourished capitals, n.p., 23 April, [1575]. 2 pages, a narrow oblong, 83 x 274mm., on parchment, a small strip at lower left with traces of original seal affixed, neatly hinged in a custon-fitted sunken mount with recess for seal, finely bound in black morocco gilt, g.e., by Riviere & Son, recto in Latin, verso in English. A DOCUMENT WITNESSED BY THE GREAT GEOGRAPHER MARINER RICHARD HAKLUYT IN 1575 A rere document signed by the young Hakluyt. It reads, "Let all know through these presents that I John Saville of the Middle Temple, Gentleman, am held and firmly obliged to Richard Garth of London...for [1,000] marks of good and legal English currency. To be payed to the same Richard or his sure attorney or his executors on the Feast of Pentecost next..., To the right and faithfully carrying out of which repayment I bind myself and my heirs and executors..." [verso:] "...if the within bounden John Savyle doe well and truely observe perfourme fulfill and kepe all and synguler the covenaunts...and agrements which on the party and behalfe of the saide John Savile are to be observed...and specified in a paire of Indentures bearyng date of [3 March 1575]...then this p[re]sent obligac[i]on to be voide..." Hakluyt (1552?-1616) attended Oxford (BA, 1574, MA 1577) where he developed a life-long interest in geography and the narratives of voyages of exploration He undertook the collection and translation into English of the important records of maritime exploration, particularly of the Americas, his first contribution being Divers Voyages Touching the Discovery of America (1584). A number of similar collections followed, culminating in his exhaustive collection entitled The Principall Navigations, Voiages and Discoveries of the English Nation (1589, enlarged in 1598-1600). In 1606 Hakluyt was one of the chief promoters of patents for the settlement of Virginia. His signature is extremely rare in any form: no example has appeared at auction since at least 1976.
