The engraver, born in made one of the earliest copies of this composition originally made by Dürer around Although the exact meaning of the engraving is still unclear, it is probably related to an old folk tale told by Poggio Bracciolini, of a sea monster off the Adriatic Coast of Italy. Winkler asserts that no other engraving of this time had the decorative beauty of this one or the effectiveness of its black and white contrast. Very good impression, with some minor plate tone. Ref.
