Beschreibung:

GEORGE SHAW (1751-1813) Speculum Linnaeanum: or Linnaean Zoology; containing a complete illustration of the zoological part of the Systema Naturae of Linnaeus. London: J.Davis, 1790. Parts I & II (all published), 4 (312 x 245mm). Parallel titles and text in Latin and English. 8 hand-coloured engraved plates by James Sowerby Original wrappers, neat repair to upper cover of part II), both contained within a single blue cloth solander box. A VERY RARE WORK, the records suggest that it has only appeared at auction once in the last twenty years (our rooms, 27 October 1988 lot 345). Only these first two parts were published, the plates comprise six of apes and monkeys and two of bats. The subject was an appropriate one for Shaw: in 1788 he took part in the founding of the Linnaean Society and was one of its first vice-presidents. The plates are an unusual subject for Sowerby who was to become known as a botanical painter almost exclusively. Despite the early demise of the present work, Shaw and Sowerby collaborated again on the Zoology of New Holland , 1794-95. BM (NH) IV, p.1911; Nissen ZBI 3836. (2)
