Game.- Wallis (Edward, publisher) Wallis's New Game of Genius, or Compendium of Inventions connected with the Arts, Sciences and Manufactures...for the Amusement and Instruction of Youth of both Sexes, folding hand-coloured engraved sheet with 36 fine aquatint vignettes around title and central view, dissected and mounted on linen, c.390 x 495mm., lightly soiled and browned, one or two small spots, with the very rare booklet of rules and descriptions, stitched in original green wrappers (slightly soiled, split to fold at foot), together in original embossed green cloth slip-case, upper cover with title and decorations in gilt, rubbed, a little worn at corners and edges, [Whitehouse p.39], small 4to, E.Wallis, [c.1835]. ⁂ Rare game depicting a variety of activities and inventions including mining, a telegraph station, magic lantern, lithographic printing, a fire-engine, ballooning, card games, paper-making, gunpowder, a barometer, life-boat, and letterpress printing around a final larger central scene described as follows: "No.37. The subject here introduced comprises some of the most striking inventions of modern genius. At a distance is seen a manufactory worked by steam; on the river a steam-vessel pursues its rapid course, while a stream is crossed by a suspension, or chain-bridge, along which is passing a train of those wonderful locomotive engines, which on a railway have conveyed the most enormous burdens at the almost incredible speed of thirty miles per hour." Library Hub lists only 2 copies in the UK (BL and National Library of Scotland, only BL with booklet); WorldCat adds 5 in America. Another copy was sold in these rooms on 21st November 2019 (lot 276) but without the rule booklet.
