Wallis's New Game of Wanderers in the Wilderness.
London: Edward Wallis, [circa 1835]. Text: 1 vol., 12mo. (6 3/4 x 4 1/4 inches; 172 x 109 mm). 16pp.; board: unbound folded hand-colored aquatint (27 x 20 inches; 690 x 514 mm). In sections mounted on linen, as issued. Text: original paper wrappers. Both text and board within a single original cloth-covered slipcase, blocked in gilt. Condition : board lightly soiled or spotted; slipcase slightly rubbed. Provenance : Early manuscript annotations to text in an unidentidfied hand; Peter & Iona Opie (from the collection of the great children's book scholars Peter & Iona Opie, with their "mother goose" ink stamp in the booklet). the opie copy of this rare english cartographic boards game , illustrating the rich flora and fauna of South America, as well as its many exotic inhabitants. This works rarity can be judged from the fact that OCLC lists only 3 copies: UCLC, Yale and the Gumuchian copy in the Lilly Library. The bound text gives the rules for playing (1 page), followed by extensive texts keyed to the 85 numbered locations on the map: e.g. "What are these that look like huts of the native Indians? Do they belong to them? No! They are Ant Hills, and inhabited by a much fiercer race. Beware how you disturb them …" [#19]. The folding board takes the form of a depiction of the South American sub-continent with integral illustrations of the peoples, flora and fauna of the various regions. Gumuchian catalogue 3430; Whitehouse Table Games p.16.
