A View of the Conduct of the Executive, in the Foreign Affairs of the United States, connected with the mission to the French Republic during the years 1794, 1795 and 1796. Philadelphia: Benj. Franklin Bache, 1797 8vo (206 x 123 mm). Contemporary manuscript index, title to each work, 3 (of 4) folding plates to Finances; Finances lacking folding plate "(B)", some browning and offsetting, a few stray spots. Full speckled calf, gilt-lettered label to spine, marbled endpapers. First edition of Alfred Gallatin's pioneering work, bound with a first edition of Monroe's defense of his term as Minister to France. Gallatin served as Jefferson’s Treasury Secretary, and helped to define the manner in which a president used executive power to limit governmental power.
