Francis Hyman Criss American, 1901-1973 Morning in Florence, 1934 American, 1901-1973 Morning in Florence, 1934 Signed Criss (lr) Oil on canvas 24 x 33 inches Provenance: Private collection A painter identified with the Precisionist movement of the 1930s, Criss was renowned for his colorful, tightly-rendered portrayals of architectonic forms within the urban landscape, especially those of Manhattan. He emigrated to Philadelphia from his native London in his childhood and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and at the Barnes Foundation in Merion, Pennsylvania, along with training privately with Jan Matulka The influence of the art of Giorgio de Chirico is evident in this scene in which Criss combined iconic architectural forms from several European cities, all ignored by pedestrians (including two nuns) who take the rich history around them for granted. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
Glue relined. Frame rubbing. Light surface grimed and scattered craquelure. There are tiny touches of inpaint in the sky, a 4 inch and 3 inch vertical line of inpaint in the clouds at the upper left quadrant. Scattered horizontal lines of inpaint across the center of the work and an area of inpaint around the signature. Scattered touches elsewhere.
