Contemporary binding : glazed calf, boards decorated with a central panel made of blind cross-fillets with gilt rings on the edges, all encircled with blind and gilt roll-stamps, gilt decorated ribbed spine, marbled edges (small scratches and defects, joints and turn ins rubbed, upper joint of vol. II partly split, corners slightly dulled). Illustrated with 25 plates depicting the protagonists of the events and some major battle scences (Louis XVI, Francis II, Alexander I, Napoleon, Wellignton, battles of Waterloo...) and 7 maps of which five on double pp. (Germany, Egypt and Syria, Italy, Spain...). The officer in the British Army Baynes (1768-1829) served during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars but he is best known for being one of the principal staff officers during the war between Britain and the United States in 1812. # Not in Brunet.
