(France, Révolution) - BAINES, Edward.- History of the wars of the French Revolution, from the breaking out of the war in 1792, to the restoration of a general peace in 1815; comprehending the civil history of Great Britain and France, during that period Embellished with portraits of the most distinguished characters of the age, and illustrated by maps, plans, and charts. London, printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, Paternoster-Row; and James Harper, 1817. 2 vol. in-4°; 32 pl. (text n.c., slightly yellowed, some pp. browned, numerous foxing on some pp.). Contemporary binding : glazed calf, boards decorated with a central panel made of blind cross-fillets with gilt rings on the edges, all encircled with blind and gilt roll-stamps, gilt decorated ribbed spine, marbled edges (small scratches and defects, joints and turn ins rubbed, upper joint of vol. II partly split, corners slightly dulled). Illustrated with 25 plates depicting the protagonists of the events and some major battle scences (Louis XVI, Francis II, Alexander I, Napoleon, Wellignton, battles of Waterloo...) and 7 maps of which five on double pp. (Germany, Egypt and Syria, Italy, Spain...). The officer in the British Army Baynes (1768-1829) served during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars but he is best known for being one of the principal staff officers during the war between Britain and the United States in 1812. # Not in Brunet.
