Engraved folding plate, woodcut device on title. 18th-century limp vellum. Second edition of Bardi's celebrated description of the game of football, as played in Florence's Piazza di Santa Croce. The first edition appeared in 1580 during the reign of Francesco I de' Medici. The 2-page dedication to Maria Maddalena Archduchess of Austria, wife of Cosimo II de' Medici and Grand Duchess of Tuscany, is signed by the publisher, Cosimo Giunti. The plate shows the game being played in the piazza Santa Croce at carnival. BL 17th-Century Italian I:74; Brunet I:653; Gamba 99 (note).
