EISENHOWER, Dwight D. (1890-1969)] Political cartoon signed ("Dwight D. Eisenhower"), n.d. 1 page, 4to (9¼ x 6 in.) . IKE KEEPS THE REINS OF THE GOP IN 1956. Titled "1956 race," the cartoon shows Eisenhower dressed in jockey gear, perched high atop a galloping if somewhat frantic looking GOP elephant. As he applies the whip, a sweating Richard Nixon precariously holds onto the beast's tail as Eisenhower says to him: "You'll have to decide if you want to hang on!" Although Ike was immensely popular and would face the same feckless opponent he vanquished in 1952, it was by no means certain that he would seek re-election. The President suffered a serious heart attack in 1955. Besides, when he contemplated the likely field of GOP hopefuls that would run instead, he felt compelled to keep the job. One of the contenders, William Knowland, was a man Ike held in utter contempt. Then there was his own Vice-President. Eisenhower never thought Nixon had the judgment or maturity to be President. "Nixon is a born loser," he once said bluntly to Emmet Hughes. "He's just not Presidential timber." Ike wasn't even sure he wanted him as the Number Two man in '56. But since, as he told an aide, "there is nothing to be gained politically by ditching him," he let Nixon decide for himself whether he wanted to hang on for the ride, and to Ike's disappointment, he said yes.
