'THERE ARE JEWISH ARTISTS AND SCHOLARS OF IMPORTANCE, BUT NO JEWISH ART AND NO JEWISH SCIENCE'. In response to a proposal to foreground Jewish identity at the New York World's Fair in 1939, Einstein considers the Jewish contribution to learning and culture, and the nature of national identity: 'I cannot approve of your plan. The fact that we Jews are scattered all over the world brings with it that our very substantial share in the cultural development of mankind manifests itself as the work of individuals and not as the work of a unified group of particular individuality. It seems to me mistaken to wish to simulate something which had no existence in reality. There are Jewish artists and scholars of importance, but no Jewish art and no Jewish science. The same also largely goes for other nations, even if in their delusion they don't wish to accept it'.
