"THAT THE CAUSE FOR WHICH WE ARE SUFFERING IS A MOMENTOUS AND SACRED CAUSE" EINSTEIN LAUDS SANDLER FOR HIS WORK "RESCUING OUR PERSECUTED FELLOW-JEWS FROM THEIR CALAMITOUS PERIL." He offers his "sincere congratulations on the splendid work you have undertaken on behalf of refugees during Dedication Week. The power of resistance which has enabled the Jewish people to survive for thousands of years has been based to a large extent on traditions of mutual helpfulness. In these years of affliction our readiness to help one another is being put to an especially severe test May we stand this test as well as did our fathers before us. We have no other means of self-defense than our solidarity and our knowledge that the cause for which we are suffering is a momentous and sacred cause..." Einstein used the identical text in other letters to prominent Jewish civic leaders who contributed or supported the efforts of Dedication Week--evidently a campaign to raise awareness of the need for Jewish rescue. Only two other examples, however, have appeared at auction. Bernard Sandler, a prominent New York lawyer, was active in both refugee aid and anti-Hitler protests from the outset of the Nazi regime. His New York Times obituary reports that in 1933 he led "the first lawyers' group to make an anti-Hitler demonstration in the city" (3 June 1958). His mother, Sarah Sandler, was also a prominent activist in support of Jewish causes. In 1918 she emigrated to Palestine where she worked for charities intended to help indigent rabbis and schoolteachers.
