It is for his political prints, dating from 1827, that the Irish artist John Doyle is chiefly remembered. Signed with the initials ‘HB’, they were usually issued once a month during parliamentary sessions, and ran for over twenty-two years. ‘As the founder of “the modern school of graphic satirists represented by Richard Doyle John Leech and John Tenniel” Doyle prepared the way for Punch. The name of “caricature” disappeared, and the modern word “cartoon” assumed its place’ (ODNB).
