DIAZ DEL CASTILLO, Bernal (1492-1581). Historia veradera de la conquista de la Nueva-España ... Sacada a luz por el P.M. Fr. Alonso Remon . Madrid: imprenta del Reyno, 1632. 2° (296 x 196mm). Title with typographic border, woodcut ornaments. (Thoroughly washed, causing ink to fade on Z3-6 and a few other leaves, B3r and B6v remaining soiled, some generally lighter soiling elsewhere, title with neatly closed tear at upper margin, repair through text in Cc1, marginal repairs to a few leaves including S8.) Brown morocco by Brugalla, 1948, gilt supralibros and spine lettering, gilt turn-ins and edges. Provenance : bought from José Sala Nadal, 1948, then rebound.

FIRST EDITION, prior to that with the engraved title. Dedicating his work to Philip IV, the author began his work when over 70 and living in retirement in Guatemala. But he wrote from an old soldier's experience, having accompanied Dávila to the New World in 1514, Velázquez to Cuba, Grijalva to Yucatán, and Hernan Cortés in the conquest of Mexico. He made a fair copy of his book at the age of 76, though it was not published till half a century later. Brunet II, 678; Goldsmith D-70; Sabin 19978: 'of much rarity'; Salva II, 3308; Palau IV, 72354: 'obra clásica por excelencia, y una de las mejores sobre la conquista de Méjico'.
