DAVID CARR (BRITISH, 1915-1968) Man and Machine Series Oil on canvas, 101 x 61cm Signed verso Together with; a biography of the artist - David Carr The Discovery of an Artist Bryan Robertson and Ronald Alley, The Mayor Gallery, 1987 Provenance: David Carr Studio Sale, Sothebys Olympia, 7th June 2007. Born into a wealthy family in London in 1915 who owned the biscuit manufacturing business of the same name. Carr studied at the East Anglian School of Art run by Cedric Morris where fellow students included Lucian Freud A collector as well as an artist, he became a friend and patron to fellow painters Robert MacBryde and Robert Colquhoun Carr became a significant artist in the Norfolk Contemporary Art Society and became heavily influenced by another friend Prunela Clough. In the 1950s he began a series of works depicting man's relationship with machines and industrial production. His work was included in a show at Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1953 and in a show at Southampton City Art Gallery. Carr died prematurely of cancer in 1968.
