cover 1856 (22 April) entire letter to Ireland, bearing SC16 1d. strip of three cancelled on arrival in London by Chief Office "3" obliterations (touched in at base to tie to cover), the reverse showing "POST OFFICE/BRITISH ARMY" datestamp type 2 (code B) in a distinct bright green shade for 26 April; the letter content is long and fascinating, describing the "grand review of the British Army" (following the signing of the peace treaty) in front of both the allied and Russian commanders in chief, also the writer's inspection of the various Russian fortifications, which had mostly suffered minimal damage after sustained allied bombardment, but which would have been evacuated had a direct assault been made. A full transcript is included
