COLERIDGE, Samuel Taylor (1772-1834). Autograph letter signed ('S T Coleridge'), to his brother Revd George Coleridge, 1½ pages, 4to, address panel at 'Mr Newcomes Hackney', postal marks [February-March 1791] (seal tear, slight spotting).
COLERIDGE, Samuel Taylor (1772-1834). Autograph letter signed ('S T Coleridge'), to his brother Revd George Coleridge, 1½ pages, 4to, address panel at 'Mr Newcomes Hackney', postal marks [February-March 1791] (seal tear, slight spotting). Coleridge sends a Greek poem (not present and otherwise unknown) and the text of a Latin ode which he incorporates in his letter 'upon the occasion of Trollope's Honour -- of which I want your opinion.' The Latin ode is entitled 'Honos alit artes' and comprises four quatrains, beginning 'Cernis, volucris, quae regit alites'. A.W. Trollope (1768-1827) to whom the ode is addressed went from Christ's Hospital (where Coleridge was educated) to Pembroke College, Cambridge in 1787. He took his degree in 1791 and the 'honour' which Coleridge celebrates in this Ode must have been the second Chancellor's Classical Medal.
