Half-titles and titles in red and black, errata leaves (not required by Cohen-de Ricci), engraved portrait of the author after Voiriot, 4 engraved plates by Le Grand, Mathieu and others after Monnet. (Plates slightly spotted.) Contemporary green morocco gilt, covers with triple fillet border and floral cornerpieces, spines in six comaprtments with floral tools, red morocco lettering-pieces in two, g.e. (lower edges of vol. I rubbed). Provenance : unidentified monogrammed leather book-label. A fine, large copy. Cohen-de Ricci 246; Sander 372. François Marie Arouet de VOLTAIRE. Romans et Contes. Bouillon: La Société Typographique, 1778. 4 parts in 3 volumes, 8° (205 x 125mm). Half-titles, titles with engraved vignette, instructions to the binder (4pp., bound at end of vol. III), portrait of the author by Cathelin after La Tour, 57 engraved plates by Patas, Deny, Dambrun, Baquoy and others after C. Monnet, J. M. Moreau, P.-C. Marillier and Martini, including two frontispieces, engraved headpieces throughout. (Occasional very light spotting.) Contemporary mottled calf gilt, spines in six compartments with floral, bird and ship tools, red morocco lettering-piece and black morocco shield with volume number onlaid (corners slightly rubbed). Plate II in vol. I in the state before numbers; first issue of the "Avis au Relieur" (see note to lot ??). Cohen-de Ricci 1038-9 ("Très belles illustrations"); Ray French 35; Sander 2024. (5)
