Paint decorated pine quartermaster’s cupboard, 12 by 18 by 18 inches, of rectangular form enclosed by hinged door with metal latch, opening to reveal an arrangement of pigeon holes, marked in pencil “bills … orders … B.R. blanks … receipts … letters …cards,” loss to paint decoration, chips and loss to surface as usual; containing within an archive of approx. 200 letters and documents relating to the 110th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1862-1865, plus earlier and later material relating to Quartermaster Samuel D. Hays. Archive includes manuscript orders and circulars, printed requisition forms, monthly return of quartermaster stores, lists of stores received, diary pages, correspondence, “Report of transportation,” and more. Highlight is a Holograph Manuscript, 1 p, folio, “Official list of killed and wounded of the 110th Reg’t, Penna Vols., at the battle of Gettysburg, July 2d 1863,” creased and stained. Lot also includes a brass-mounted mahogany spyglass, 13 ½ inches, and 2 brass and leather powder horns, 15 ½ inches, all with some wear but still intact. Samuel D. Hays was a quartermaster with the 1st brigade, 2nd Division, 5th Corps, then transferred in either late 1863 or early 1864 to the 110th Pennsylvania volunteers. This is his quartermaster’s desk, and it contains an astonishingly complete look at the day-to day-operations of the 110th Pennsylvania, a regiment organized in 1861 soon after the outbreak of war which saw battle at the Battle of Cedar Mountain, Manassas, Bull Run, Fredricksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Rapidan, Battle of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg (including the July 30 mine explosion), and Appomattox. The documents contained herein give an astonishingly detailed look daily life during the Civil War. See illustration.
