Large woodcut of Julius Caesar enthroned and surrounded by eight counsellors and with Cicero shown writing in the background to the right on title, portrait of Schwarzenberg (after Dürer) and 101 woodcut illustrations in text, including 99 by Hans Weiditz and one by Hans Burgkmair (Some minor worming.) Contemporary German blind tooled calf, upper cover stamped with armorial device of the Benedictine Abbey of Lambach, two brass catches and clasps (one clasp lacking, sympathetically rebacked). Provenance: Lambach, Benedictine Abbey (binding, ink stamp on title). Fifth (?) edition of the first German translation, which was first published by Steiner on 16 February 1531. Sixty-seven of Weiditz's woodcuts (including three repeats) were designed specifically for the Cicero. Subjects include a conjurer performing sleight-of-hand tricks, a pilgrim, a notary's office, painters' studios, draper's and armourer's shops, an astrolabe and a dancing bear. This copy was formerly part of a sammelband, as suggested by the remains of an index tab on title-page. Brunet II:63; Fairfax Murray German 118; Muther 878.
