Large woodcut of Julius Caesar enthroned and surrounded by eight counsellors and with Cicero shown writing in the background to the right on title, portrait of Schwarzenberg (after Dürer) and 101 woodcut illustrations in text, including 99 by Hans Weiditz and one by Hans Burgkmair (Small worm hole affecting first 68 leaves.) 19th-century half leather and marbled boards (upper cover detached). Provenance : Georg Kloss (bookplate, Sotheby's London, 27 May 1835, lot 4168). Third edition of the first German translation, which was first published by Steiner on 16 February 1531. Sixty-seven of Weiditz's woodcuts (including three repeats) were designed specifically for the Cicero. Subjects include a conjurer performing sleight-of-hand tricks, a pilgrim, a notary's office, painters' studios, draper's and armourer's shops, an astrolabe and a dancing bear.
