Commissioned by the Graphic Arts Council of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to coincide with the exhibition Two Centuries of Black American Art in 1976. Also included is a poster for the event featuring the image. Charles Wilbert White, Jr. was an American artist known for his chronicling of African American related subjects in paintings and murals. White's best known work is The Contribution of the Negro to American Democracy, a mural at Hampton University
