3pp., 7.75 x 9.75", Fort Hays (VA), 18 October 1864. Signed only "A.L.R." Top of first page has hand-drawn eagle, with "Lincoln and Johnson" ribbon held in beak, branches in talons. "Fort Hays, VA. October 18th /64" in decorative lettering. This is one of the most eloquent and literate epistles we have seen from this war, since many soldiers were barely able to compose a letter home. The writer is very patriotic, and includes lines such as, "...in order to preserve this Union unsullied and untarnished, Slavery must become extinct, and no better opportunity will ever ofer [sic] itself to the American people than to ... make one bold push for Abraham Lincoln...." Later he speculates on the progress of the war, noting a brief period of calm. "Conjectures as to Grant's next move on this great game of chess seems to be the order of the day." Condition:A few holes where ink of wings soaked through paper, plus a ghost of wings on bottom of page. This does not affect any text, since the writer went around the eagle when composing the letter. Usual folds with minor separations at same, a few short margin tears, none affecting text. Light toning of panel which was folded out on verso.
