BRAUN, GEORG and FRANS HOGENBERG. [Civitates Orbis Terrarum. Cologne 1588-98]. Vols. 4 and 5 only, folio, 408 x 287 mm. (16 1/8 x 11 1/4 in.), contemporary German blind roll-tooled alum-tawed pigskin, covers panelled with outer border of interlocking acorn and leaf roll-tool, inner rolls of Saints, male monarchs alternating with birds, and floral rolls, contemporary manuscript lettering at head of spine, edges stained blue, traces of ties, a few small wormholes, minor staining, small tear to leather at head of spine; lacking 4 plates in vol. 5 (Koeman 4, 37, 46 and 51), double-sheet view of Rome torn along sheet juncture with some loss to lower sheet (detached), upper sheet with two short tears, both sheets creased, large folding plate of Antwerp creased and with 9-inch tear, small skilfully repaired tear to pl. 4:11, 3 or 4 other plates with short internal tears or fold breaks, occasional creasing, glue stain along gutter of pl. 5:12, occasional faint offsetting, upper margins lightly dust-soiled . Latin edition, two engraved titles, preliminary text, index leaves, 124 (of 128) double-sheet engraved views and plans after Joris Hoefnagel and others, letterpress text and numbering on versos (most vol. 5 plates unnumbered), typesetting of vol. 4 differing in places from same vol. in lot 12, a few plates in vol. 5 bound out of order, Koeman II B & H 4-5. Provenance : Christopher Rechlinger, Augustani, manuscript ex-libris dated 1599 on front flyleaf -- Unidentified nineteenth-century blind-embossed armorial stamp on front pastedown -- Frederick H. Rindge (1857-1905).
