BRAUN, GEORG and FRANS HOGENBERG. Civitates Orbis Terrarum. Antwerp: Philippe de Galle, and Cologne: by the authors, 1572. Vol. 1 only, folio, 412 x 288 mm. (16 1/4 x 11 3/8 in.), contemporary French limp vellum case binding, covers with gilt fillet border enclosing double gilt fillet panel with gilt-hatched central cartouche and cornerpieces, fleurons at angles, title lettered in ink at head of spine, edges stained red, marginal tears and a few stains to title, this issue without the full-sheet Granada map, plate 47 (Naples) torn along center fold, 8 other plates with shorter fold breaks, one or two small stains, occasional discoloration, some marginal soiling . Latin text, ruled in brown ink throughout, engraved title, [10] preliminary leaves, 58 unnumbered double-sheet engraved town views and plans by Hogenberg and Simon Novellanus after Joris Hoefnagel and others, letterpress descriptions on versos, contents leaf at end. Presumably an early issue, varying from Koeman (and from tvol. 1 in the following lot) in several points: without the full-sheet view of Granada, a smaller version of which appears instead on pl. 4 beneath that of Barcelona, as called for in the contents leaf at end (not in Koeman), plates 12 and 27 also differing from Koeman's description, six-view plate 40 with the space for Ingolstadt view left blank, several maps without the artist's signature called for by Koeman; the preliminary leaves differing in collation, Georg Braun's preface preceding instead of following Grapheus's verses, which are followed by a short errata and the privilege. Koeman II, B & H 1; Phillips Atlases 59. . Provenance : Frederick H. Rindge (1857-1905).
