Engraved title by Jacques van Merlen after Abraham van Diepenbeeck and 50 oval emblematic illustrations by A. Pauli after Diepenbeeck. (Small scattered stains.) Calf gilt by Riviere and Son, gilt edges (lightly rubbed). Provenance : O.A. (inscription on verso of title dated 1829) -- S.A. Thompson Yates (booklabel). A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. This charming emblem book on the vanities of this world is valued for its interior and street scenes, landscapes and architectural views of Flemish towns. Funck describes the plates as being by Joannes Galle after Pauli and Diepenbeeck. Brunet I, 1405; De Vries 178; Landwehr Low Countries , 98; Praz pp. 292-93; cf. Funck p. 284.
