Beschreibung:

BOURGOGNE, Antoine de (d.1657). Linguae vitia et remedia emblematice expressa . Antwerp: Joannes Cnobbaert, 1631.
BOURGOGNE, Antoine de (d.1657). Linguae vitia et remedia emblematice expressa . Antwerp: Joannes Cnobbaert, 1631. Oblong 16° (72 x 101mm). Half-title. Etched title, 93 etched emblems by J. Neefs and A. Pauwels after Abraham van Diepenbeeck, comprising 2 preliminary emblems, 90 numbered and one final unnumbered emblem. A8 is cancelled. (A5 with closed tear through engraving on verso.) Old style vellum with metal and leather clasps, manuscript title on spine. Provenance : Bibliographical note in ink at front [by Henry Green?] -- [James Tregaskis (his loosely inserted bill of sale, undated, describing the binding as 'old black morocco' and listing price as £8.10.0)] -- [H. Yates Thompson] -- S.A. Thomson Yates (attribution in pencil). YATES THOMPSON COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. An edition with Flemish text also appeared in the same year. Educated by Jesuits, Antoine de Bourgougne's emblematic works linked the Jesuit emblem books with literature of a popular kind, aimed at a literate middle class and using a vernacular language. His footnotes reveal his Jesuit background, citing at times Aldrovandus and others as authorities for the personality traits he ascribes to animals in his allegories. "'Les estampes, qui occupent le verso de chaque feuillet, sont gravées fort délicatement"' (Funck p. 284, quoting Paquot, but misdating the work 1630). Landwehr Low Countries , 95; Praz, p. 292 (incorrect plate count).
