Nuremberg: Anton Koberger at the instigation of Maximilian I, 21 September 1500. Chancery 2 o (283 x 200 mm). Collation : [π 6 χ 8 ] a-z A-F 8 G-H 6 2 a-f 8 g 6 . 310 leaves (of 312; lacks 1/2 armorial woodcuts and h/6). 57 lines and headline, double column. 6 (of 7) full-page woodcuts, including 2 portraits of St. Bridget and, 51 smaller cuts assembled to form 10 full-page illustrations, THE WOODCUTS FINELY COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND in orange, red, green, blue, purple, ochre and brown. 11-line and smaller initial spaces, most with printed guide- letters, rubricated in red with Lombard initials, capital strokes, paragraph marks and underlining. (Some browning, l5, p2 and p3 torn, affecting text or image). Later pigskin over wooden boards (rebacked, corners repaired, clasps renewed). Provenance : Kempten? "Monasterii Campililiorum" (ownership inscription on title) -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate; purchased from Dawson's Bookshop, Los Angeles, 1 August 1941) -- donated to SMS 194. A FINELY COLORED COPY, of the second Latin edition and first Koberger edition of the visions of the motherly Swedish saint. The first Latin and first complete edition, used by Koberger as copy-text for this edition, was printed at Lübeck by Bartholomaeus Ghotan for the use of the Bridgetine Cloister at Vadstena in 1492 (GW 4391). The Koberger woodblocks were copied from the cuts of the 1492 edition, thought to have been designed by the lay brother Gerhardus. Long attributed to Albrecht Dürer the woodcuts have been reassigned to Dürer workshop and are possibly made after the master's sketches. BMC II, 445 (IB.7558); BSB-Ink.
