These are the earliest systematic 'books about books' to be published and they mark the beginning of modern critical bibliography. For Gesner was no mere enumerator of titles; he gave also his considered estimate of their comparative worth. The present ample folio, the first of the series, is the author-bibliography, in which the writers are arranged under their names. Their books are listed with particulars of the various printed editions, as well as critical notes; even manuscripts and projected and unfinished works are mentioned ... 'The Universal Library' and its sequels qualify him also for the title of protobibliographer of the printed book." (PMM) - Exemplar mit dem 18-seit. Fehlstellen und fleckig (leichter Textverlust), der eigentliche Textkorpus überwieg. sauber und gut erhalten.
