Philadelphia: William Fry for Thomas Dobson, 1814. 2 volumes, 8 o (219 x 134 mm). Half-titles. Hebrew type, shoulder notes in Latin. (Some pale browning and occasional spotting, some intermittent pale dampstaining.) Contemporary sheep, black morocco lettering pieces (joints skilfully repaired). Provenance : Monroe Allen (bookplate, pencil signature on first title); Minnesota Historical Society (bookplate, presented by J. Fletcher Williams). THE FIRST HEBREW BIBLE PRINTED IN AMERICA. A reprint of Van der Hooght's text, without vowel-points or accents. It is based on the 1661 critical edition edited by Johannes Leusden (1624-1699), a Calvinist theologian, and published by Joseph Athias (d. 1700), founder of a Hebrew-Dutch printing house. It was not until 1849 that a vocalized Hebrew Bible was published in America. Darlow & Moule 5168a; Rosenbach 171. (2)
