Engraved title-page, hand-colored (heightened in gold). 2 parts in one, 12mo, 108 x 52 mm. (4¼ x 2 in.), contemporary red morocco, covers with double gilt fillet borders and central panel with small floral tools at corners surrounding a central gilt ornament, spine richly gilt, edges gilt and gauffered, some wear. [Bound-with:] CALENDARIO facil y curiozo... Amsterdam, 1667-68. 7 leaves (including 3 folding tables). The Utrecht professor Johannes Leusden (1624-1699), who had also been involved in Athias 1659-61 Hebrew Bible edition, was involved in the preparations of this edition, and wrote, among other things, a short Latin commentary for the text from the book of Joshua onward. A presentation copy offered by Athias to the States General of the Netherlands brought him a gold medal worth six hundred guilders. On the title-page Athias refers to the tragic burning of his father, who was burned alive at the stake as a judaizer in Cordova on 29 June 1665, by calling himself Joseph, son of the martyr Abraham Athias. Daniel Ernst Jablonski, who himself published a Hebrew Bible in Berlin in 1699, states, on the authority of Johannes Leusden, that Athias, after printing four or five sheets of this volume, determined to raise the number of copies from 4500 to no less than 5000.
