BARTOLI, Pietro Santi (c.1635-1700). Picturae Antiquissimi Virgiliani Codicis Bibliothecae Vaticanae . Rome: Monaldini, 1782. 4° (287 x 194mm). Portrait frontispiece of Virgil. Engraved title and 124 engraved plates by Bartoli (plate CXXII with small piece of corner torn away, library stamp on verso of portrait, occasional light marginal spotting and browning). Modern red half morocco (lightly rubbed). Pietro Bartoli first produced the present set of engravings, without text, in 1677. They were based on the original paintings in the Codex Vaticanus , the earliest known 4th-century manuscript of Virgil, and first published with text in 1741. Brunet V, 1291.
