Paris: [published for private distribution by the comte de Caylus], 1757. [ Bound with :] [BARTHELEMY, Jean-Jacques (1716-1795)]. La Mosaïque de Palestrine . [Paris]: 1760. 2 works in one volume (as published), large 2° (517 x 364mm). First work: title with woodcut vignette, 33 hand-coloured engraved plates; second work: half-title, hand-coloured double-page engraved plate, one plain engraved plate, mounted on guards throughout. (Occasional light marginal surface soiling, a few text leaves lightly browned, minor marginal tear to one text leaf.) BINDING: contemporary French red morocco gilt by the ATELIER OF ANTOINE-MICHEL PADELOUP, covers with foral outermost roll enclosing a wide dentelle border composed of scroll and branch tools with urn and scallop tool cornerpieces linked by ribbon cartouches, arms of the 3rd Earl of Bute added to the centre of both covers, flat spine in eight compartments, olive morocco lettering piece in the second, the rest with bird and flower tool, roll-toolded turn-ins, marbled paper endpapers, g.e (occasional slight rubbing to extremities, with slight wear to one lower corner). PROVENANCE: John Stuart 3rd Earl of Bute (1713-1792; binding) -- his grandson Charles, Baron Stuart de Rothesay (1779-1845; sale Sotheby's, 5th May 1936, lot 378) -- Lucius Wilmerding (bookplate; sale New York, 1951, lot 85) -- Count Felix Goblet d'Alviella -- [Eric Speeckaert, Brussels bookseller, (catalogue, 1987, no. 45, ill.). THE BUTE COPY OF THE EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION OF 'CE MAGNIFIQUE OUVRAGE' (Brunet), ONE OF ONLY 30 COPIES PRINTED, with fine plates, beautifully hand-coloured in watercolour. Descriptions by the work's patron, the comte de Caylus and Pierre-Jean Mariette accompany the engravings after Bartoli's watercolours of Antique paintings discovered in Rome in the second half of the 17th century. The workshop of Antoine-Michel Padeloup, 'Relieur du Roi' was continued after his death in 1758 by his widow (see Thoinan, Les Relieurs français , p.367). The binding on the very fine Bute copy shares the large dentelle plaques with the de luxe copies of the 1748 "Fêtes de Strasbourg", which were all executed by the royal binder Padeloup le jeune. Brunet I, 682 ('on y ajoute ordinairement La Mosaïque de Palestrine '); Berlin Kat. 3948 (2nd edition); Cicognara 3598 (2nd edition).
