AUTOGRAPH COLLECTION -- a collection of correspondence to Henry Charlton BASTIAN (1837-1915), physician and neurologist, comprising letters, notes and related printed material, from prominent British and French neurologists, physicians and scientists, including: Sir William RAMSAY (9 autograph letters and postcard signed, 1907-1915), William OSLER (autograph letter signed and 2 telegrams), W. BATESON (7 autograph letters signed, 1902), Herbert SPENCER (autograph letter signed, notes signed and related material), M. FOSTER (10 autograph letters signed), John Hughlings JACKSON, Archibald GEIKIE and others, altogether c. 114 items . An interesting collection of scientific letters. Bastian, an honoured physician, was celebrated for his neurological studies of aphasias. He was a firm supporter of the theory of evolution, but became a contraversial figure when championing the 'spontaneous generation of life', opposing the germ theory of disease. This collection of letters, from prominent physicians and scientists of the Victorian age, include discussions of Bastian's work and points of scientific and medical interest. The collection includes letters from Sir William Ramsay, in which he offers observations on Bastian's experiments, and discusses scientific points in detail. Also present are some of Bastian's notes relating to his publication, The Origin of Life (1911).
