ASTRONOMICAL SAMMELBAND, containing 10 printed editions, all rare, and 5 manuscripts, assembled in the first half of the 16th century, apparently in Bohemia, all pertaining to astronomy, medicine and science. Its contemporary compiler, as well as early subsequent owners, show themselves to have been keen students of scinece. The printed texts are extensively annotated and supplements by manuscript tracts on astronomy, often summarising or commenting on the printed editions with which they are bound. Most of the works included are known to survive in a few copies only, many of which are not represented in major national, scientific, or medical institutions. 4°. Contemporary blindstamped Bohemian or German pigskin over wooden boards. Provenance : annotations in several hands, one manuscript naming Wolfgang Schindler, of Elnbogen, Bohemia. THE PRINTED WORKS CONTAINED ARE: ARISTOTELES (384-322 B.C.). Meteorologica , paraphrase by Jacques Lefèvre d'Etaples. Nuremberg: Fredericus Peypus, 11 November 1512. Attributed in the text to Benedictus Kamisius/Kanuti, the author is probably the 14th-century Johannes Jacobi (Jean Jasme), physician to Pope Urban V and professor of medicine at Montpellier. The investigation is in three parts, 'de perfectione primi et divini', 'de intelligentiis' and 'de corporibus eternis et de hominis in hac vita felictitate'. A reference in the text identifies Vuolffgang Schindler as 'Cubitensis' (? from 'Cubitus', i.e. Elnbogen, W. Bohemia). Manuscript in Latin, 'Tractatus de sphera', [early 16th Century], an introductory summary of the printed Tractatus of Johannes de Sacro Bosco which follows, 9 pages in two columns
