Three overlapping vintage gelatin silver prints on fiber-based paper [NASA images AS11–40-5889, AS11–40-5890, AS11–40-5881, originally shot on color film]. Each 20.3×25.4 cm (8×10 in), numbered “AS11–40-5889”, “40–5890”, “AS11–40-5881” in margin, with handwritten USGS annotations identifying lunar rocks at Tranquility Base (NASA / United States Geological Survey, Flagstaff, Arizona). (3). An extremely rare panorama from the first manned mission on the surface of another world. Aldrin took this panoramic sequence from the rim of the so-called Double Crater on a position 7 m west of the LM ladder. The interior and wall of Double Crater are visible in detail. The diameter of the younger (and largest) eastern component of Double Crater to the right is about 12 m. “I took the first panorama out in front without having the camera mounted on the RCU and it did not appear to be unnatural to do so. It’s much easier to operate with it mounted; however, I didn’t find that the weight of the camera was as much a hindrance to operation as pre-flight simulations indicated it would be.” Buzz Aldrin (1969 Technical Debrief, from the ALSJ mission transcript at 110:31:47 GET). From the mission transcript when the panorama was taken: 110:28:22 Aldrin: As I look around the area, the contrast, in general, is...comes about completely by virtue of the shadows. Almost (garbled) looking down-Sun at zero-phase very light-colored gray, light gray color (garbled) a halo around my own shadow, around the shadow of my helmet. [...] 110:31:48 Aldrin: And right in this area, there are two craters. The one that’s right in front of me now as I look off in about the eleven o’clock position from the spacecraft, (is) about 30 to 35 feet across. There’s several rocks to boulders (that is, pieces that could be called rocks or boulders) 6 to 8 inches across (garbled) sizes.
