ATTRIBUTED TO THE SWING PAINTER, CIRCA 540-520 B.C.
AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURED NECK-AMPHORA ATTRIBUTED TO THE SWING PAINTER, CIRCA 540-520 B.C. One side with a departure scene with a warrior standing between two bearded men enveloped in mantles, the warrior facing right, armed with greaves, a corselet, a circular shield, a spear, and a crested Corinthian helmet, the shield with an apron hanging over his forearm; the other side with a combat between two hoplites running to the right, both depicted nude, the lead warrior turning back, protecting himself with his circular shield and thrusting with his spear, wearing greaves, a high-crested Corinthian helmet, and a baldric over his shoulder, his pursuer wearing greaves and a crested Corinthian helmet, a baldric over his shoulder, his Boeotian shield with ivy leaves surrounding a central disk; with rays above the foot, bands of key and lotus bud chain above, alternating red and black tongues on the shoulders, palmette lotus chain on the neck, a lotus bud and palmette complex below the triple-reeded handles; details in added red and white 14½ in. (36.8 cm.) high
