AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURED AMPHORA (TYPE B) ATTRIBUTED TO THE BUCCI PAINTER, CIRCA 540 B.C. The obverse with a departure scene, with a bearded charioteer driving a quadriga, identified by an inscription as Hipodamas, holding the reins taut, a goad in his left hand, wearing a long, patterned chiton and a petasos, the departing soldier behind, identified by an inscription, armed in a high-crested Corinthian helmet, a corselet over a short patterned chiton, and greaves, a spear in his right hand, his Boeotian shield in his lowered left, its interior visible with his hand clenched around the grip, a gesturing woman facing them at the center, identified by an inscription as Klerist[e], veiled and enveloped by a patterned himation over a long chiton, her hands raised before her face, a bearded man to the far right seated on a folding stool, identified by an inscription as Higomedon, wearing a striped himation, a staff in his right hand, an inscription below the horses, reading: peisis kalos ; the reverse with a soldier standing beside his horse, wearing a crested Corinthian helmet, a corselet and greaves, two spears in his right hand, an armed youth behind wearing a corselet over a short chiton, a scabbard over his shoulder, a spear in his right hand, his left arm gesturing, a soldier to the far right facing them, armed in a crested Corinthian helmet and greaves, his large circular shield over his shoulder, holding a long spear, a nude youth before him facing right, holding a spear in his left hand; lotus-palmette chain above the scenes, rays above the foot, extensive use of added red, graffiti on the underside of the foot reading, OD 15 3/8 in.
